How to Make a Website for Free in 2026: The Real Options and Their Limits

You can make a website for free — the real question is what you give up. Four free options compared, what they can't do for a business in Georgia, and when it's worth paying.

"Free website" is one of the first things a business searches for when it thinks about going online. The short answer: yes, you can make a website for free. The real question is what you give up in return. This article walks through four real free options, their limits, and when a free site is enough — and when it isn't.

1) What a "free website" really means

Every free website builder charges you the same things — just not in money:

  • The address isn't yours. Your site won't be yourbusiness.ge but something like username.wixsite.com/site. Customers find it hard to remember and trust it less.
  • Ads and platform branding. On most free plans the platform's ads or logo appear on your site, and you can't remove them.
  • Limited features. Online payments, your own domain, more storage and detailed SEO settings usually sit on paid plans.
  • Your time. You do the design, text, photos and structure yourself. For a first site that often takes several days.

2) Four real ways to make a website for free

Google Sites

Google's free tool for simple pages. It shows no ads and works with your Google account.

  • What you get: a simple editor, free hosting and a sites.google.com address.
  • Limits: few design choices, no online store or payments, minimal search settings.
  • Good for: an event page, an internal page or a very simple business card site.
  • Your own domain: you can connect one — you only pay for the domain.

Wix

One of the best-known builders: lots of templates and a flexible editor.

  • What you get: on the free plan — templates, hosting and a wixsite.com address.
  • Limits: Wix ads appear on every page. Taking online payments needs a paid plan (as of October 2026, Core or higher), and connecting your own domain is a paid feature too.
  • Good for: testing an idea before you move to a paid plan.

WordPress.com

A hosted, ready-made version of WordPress, run by WordPress.com itself.

  • What you get: a blog and simple pages on a wordpress.com address.
  • Limits: visitors see ads, your own domain and plugins are on paid plans, and storage is limited (around 1 GB).
  • Good for: a blog or a personal page.
  • Worth knowing: WordPress.com and a WordPress site built on your own hosting are different things. The second is paid and gives you far more freedom — we cover it in WordPress or a custom website.

Tilda

Good-looking pages built from blocks — a builder popular with designers.

  • What you get: one site, a limited block library and a tilda.ws address.
  • Limits: your own domain, payments and the full block library are paid features.
  • Good for: a one-page presentation or a quick landing page draft.

Google's free "business sites" no longer exist

For years, Google Business Profile came with a free website (business.site). Google closed it in 2024, and those addresses stopped working in June 2024. The Business Profile itself — your business on Google Maps — is still free, and every business needs one, website or not.

3) The comparison in one table

Platform Free address Ads Your own domain Online payments
Google Sites sites.google.com No Yes (you pay for the domain) No
Wix wixsite.com Yes Paid plan Paid plan
WordPress.com wordpress.com Yes Paid plan Paid plan
Tilda tilda.ws Tilda badge Paid plan Paid plan

Platforms change their terms from time to time, so check their official pricing page before you upgrade.

4) What a free website can't give a business in Georgia

  • A .ge domain. Free platforms only give you their own subdomain. A .ge domain has to be bought separately, and connecting it usually needs a paid plan as well. How to choose and register one is covered in our .ge domain registration guide.
  • Card payments through Georgian banks. Free plans have no online payments at all, and even on paid builders, connecting Bank of Georgia or TBC is often difficult or impossible. If you plan to sell through the site, check this first. What such an integration involves is described in payment gateway integration in Georgia.
  • A strong position on Google. A free site will most likely show up when people search for your business by name. Climbing for competitive searches ("dentist in Vake", "hotel in Batumi") with a subdomain and limited SEO settings is very hard.
  • Full control of your site. The site lives on rented ground: if the terms change or a feature is shut down — as happened to Google's business sites — moving elsewhere usually means rebuilding the site from scratch.
  • Email on your own domain. An address like info@yourbusiness.ge needs your own domain.

5) When a free website is enough

A free option is the right choice when:

  • you're testing an idea and want to see whether people are interested before you spend money;
  • you need a temporary page — for an event, a promotion or a sign-up form;
  • you need a personal portfolio and most clients come through referrals;
  • your customers don't search for you on Google and the site is only there for contact details.

If social media is doing the job, you may not need a website yet at all — see Facebook page vs website.

6) When a paid website is worth it

As the business grows, a free site starts getting in the way. A paid website is worth it when:

  • you sell or take bookings through the site and need card payments;
  • you spend money on ads and want visitors to land on a fast, trustworthy page;
  • you want new customers to find you on Google for the searches that describe your service;
  • you need two languages, several service pages or an admin panel where you change text and prices yourself.

If budget is the main obstacle, you don't need a large one-off payment. At Weblier, website development is also available as a monthly plan: a landing page from 209 GEL a month, covering the build, domain, hosting and upkeep (12-month minimum). Every package's fixed price is on the pricing page.

FAQ

Question 1: Can I sell products online on a free website?
On free plans, usually not: online payments are a paid feature. Connecting Georgian bank card payments is often hard even on paid builders. If selling is the main goal, plan an online store from the start.

Question 2: Can I connect a .ge domain to a free website?
On Google Sites — yes, once you've paid for the domain. On Wix, WordPress.com and Tilda, connecting your own domain requires a paid plan.

Question 3: Will a free website show up on Google?
Yes, free sites get indexed and will most likely appear when people search for your business name. Ranking high for competitive searches takes your own domain, a fast site, good structure and full control over SEO.

Question 4: Which free platform should I choose?
For a very simple page — Google Sites (no ads). For more design control — Wix or Tilda. For a blog — WordPress.com. Whichever you choose, keep your texts and photos saved separately so you can move them to a new site easily later.
